Neil Gaiman masterclass, subvert the familiar excercise
Scar was filled with glee and tremendous tender when Simba was born.
No one expected this, even Scar himself. How come that this little ball of fur could be a threat? A threat to what? By that moment, his craving for power and authority had been going downhill: too exhausting and not really a well-paid job it is to plot against the current King and his court. He was wanting some peace and serenity already. And then Simba came to life making him feel so alive again, so proud and hopeful.
Sarabi would trust the new-born cub to Scar, taking him back only for feeding and showering, that is how harmonious life in the pride was. Everyone was supposed to be happy, everyone had been afraid of Scar's temper for a long time. But Mufasa wasn't happy, still afraid of his temper though.
He knew what complicated texture Scar was made of, how jealousy, short-fueled anger, constant envy and search for everyone's approval were married with vulnerability, deep understanding of things, infinite creative potential, whole-hearted and contagious laugh (with time and hurt it would bring, easy-going, awkward, charming and sincere pal acquired the armor of cold steel). To lose the love of his kid, that is what Mufasa was afraid of and that is why he split them up. Rafiki knew it would not come to a good end.
