Sharp Objects/'I will kill you with my kindness'
I have so much to say about them.
I want to read the book now, first things first. (by Gillian Flinn, "Sharp Objects").
So, by putting the main character, not a really successful journalist, into the situation of getting back to her hometown to cover the murder of a girl, the creators, basically, killed two birds with one stone: we've got a wonderful introduction to her upbringing (her past) and why didn't she want to come back (her present, but not really). And, the main idea for her is to meet her past, her pain, to fix anything possible to fix to get her life together. We've got so much mystery and so many fascinating and enigmatic characters portrayed by Amy Adams, Chris Messina, and Patricia Clarkson.
The reminder of the hell setting of the town Wind Gap with every and each of society having something truly dark to keep and something appropriate and beautiful to show ('when they say 'bless your heart', they mean 'fuck you') is an immense part of the story (Jupiter kills its own children). Which, along with a brilliant reference and reverence to the August Strindberg's "Doll House" play frames the story of 'something wrong with the women here' into the drama of womanhood passing from one generation to another where everybody hurts. The question is, hurts or gets hurt. How the logic of dysfunctional families and toxic parents works, quick but thorough guide.
I say the darkness and stylishness of the True Detective (season 1) plus wonderful script and cast multiplied by sharp subjects brought to the surface for further discussion, it's so needed and worth to watch.
